Alabama Crimson Tide- A College Football Dynasty
The Alabama Crimson Tide have been a college football dynasty for years now. Alabama is known for always being 1 from the teams at the forefront of college football. From the day of Paul “Bear” Bryant to the current year of 2010. It doesn’t matter since Alabama is always a team to be considered a factor in the national title hunt nearly each season. Alabama is one from the most talked about & adorned football programs within the history of college football. Alabama’s football program began in 1892. Since that time the Crimson Tide has banked 13 national championships. Alabama currently plays within the SEC conference & was also a previous member in the Southern Conference(So-Con).
Bear Bryant coached the Crimson Tide from 1958-1982. During his tenure Bryant won 6 national titles. His coaching record over those years was a whopping 232-46-9. Paul “Bear” Bryant is probably the greatest coach in Alabama history. The team’s stadium(Bryant-Denny) is named after him. The most dominant time for coach Bryant was between 1970-1979.During this time Bryant won 8 conference titles & 3 national championships. He also brought 13 conference titles & 11 bowl victories. Out with the 25 season spent at Alabama Bear Bryant lead the school to 24 bowl games. That’s pretty darn good.The final game Bryant coached came in the 1982 Liberty Bowl. His final game was another victory too by defeating the Illinois 21-15. Once he retired from college football, sadly enough, coach Bryant passed away 4 weeks later of a heart attack.
Once Bear Bryant left the school Ray Perkins took over at the helm. The very first year for Perkins was solid with a 7-4 record with a victory within the Sun Bowl over SMU. However, his 2nd year was 1 to not remember. The Crimson Tide went 5-6. This was the 1st losing season for the Tide in 28 years. Perkins followed with successful seasons until he decided to leave the program for the NFL & the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bill Curry then took over for 3 winning seasons before leaving to due to stress with the Alabama academic department.
From 1990-1996 Gene Stalling was head coach. The Tide went 7-5 in the first season with a bowl game loss to Louisville. The next season was a great one. Alabama went 11-1 with only a loss to Florida. The Tide defeated Colorado within the Blockbuster bowl 30-25. Stalling went on with successful seasons until he decided to retire after the 1996 campaign. There was one gloom spot during his coaching days at Alabama though. Alabama was forced to vacate 8 wins from the 1993 season. This was due to a previous player(Antonio Langham) violating NCAA rules. He had signed with a pro sports agent the previous year which is a rules violation.
Since the late 1990′s Alabama has been through a few head coaches. Frank DuBose took over from 1997-2000. There was 3 solid seasons including an SEC championship in 1999. However, with high expectations in 2000 the Tide had a 3-8 record. Following the 2000 season DuBose was replaced by Dennis Franchione. His tenure was short with only 2 years at the helm even though he lead the school to winning seasons both years. Franchione left Alabama for Texas A&M.
In 2002, Mike Price was introduced as head coach. His tenure was even shorter when he was removed amidst a scandal after only 1 year. Mike Shula(son of former coaching great Don Shula) too over next in 2003. From 2003-2006 Shula compiled a 26-23 record including a 10-2 season in 2005. In 2006 the team struggled with a 6-6 record. This lead to Shula being fired. In 2007, Alabama hired famed & well known coach Nick Sabin. Since taking over the program Sabin has already won a national championship in 2010 by beating Texas in the BCS Championship Game. Thus far in 3 seasons Sabin has a record of 33-8 with a single SEC & national championship. Many more might be to come with this great coach.
